Cardiology is the branch of medicine that deals with diseases and abnormalities of the heart.  A cardiologist is a doctor with special training that helps them identify, treat and prevent heart disease.  Here in Jacksonville cardiology is our specialty.  We treat congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease and more.

First Coast Cardiology is your Jacksonville cardiology solution.  Cardiology is a complex field with different specialties.  All cardiologists have the same core training and are able to diagnose, manage medicines and help prevent cardiovascular disease.  Some cardiologists might specialize in diagnosing and treating heart problems in children, known as pediatric cardiology.  Others may only treat adults, knows as adult cardiology.  There are also specialists in interventional procedures like balloon angioplasty and stent placement, echocardiography and electrophysiology to name a few.

Heart disease of any sort can be a difficult condition to deal with.  It’s important that you find the right specialist for you and your condition.  Your primary care physician will typically refer you to a cardiologist. Once your cardiologist has evaluated you and your medical history, they may suggest specific tests to determine your exact condition.  Your cardiologist can then decide if your condition can be managed with medicine or will require surgery.  If medicine will treat your condition, your cardiologist will prescribe the necessary medication.  If you’ll need surgery, your cardiologist will refer you to a cardiovascular surgeon.  In either case, you’re still under the care of your cardiologist.

How Do We Test Your Heart?

One of the most common tools used by a cardiologist is the echocardiogram or ECG.  Your cardiologist will perform your ECG test and interpret the results.  They will combine those readings with the results of urine and blood tests, stress tests and/or cardiac catheterization tests with a micro-camera.  These test will help your cardiologist understand what is going on with your entire cardiovascular system (veins, arteries, heart & blood).
