Referral Specialist Opening 

Reports To: Provider Resource Scheduler & Referral Center Manager    

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

 

Summary: Responsible for assisting in monitoring utilization of medical services to ensure cost effective use of medical resources through processing prior authorizations by performing the following duties.

Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

1. Verifies eligibility and benefits for all patients.*

2. Answers phone queues and processes faxes within the established standards.*

3. Enters authorizations into the system prior to office visit.*

4. Notifies patient via phone of completed referral and mail a copy.*

5. Assists patients with scheduling appointments, as needed.*

6. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Language Ability:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel,.

Education/Experience:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and one to two years’ experience and/or trainingin a hospital or medical office; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Specialized Training:

Working knowledge of medical terminology and familiarity with insurance billing policies and procedures

Job description

LOCATION IN ORGANIZATION:

The position is located in the Corporate office of FCCI. It reports directly to the Finance Manager for all matters, including job duties, performance evaluations, approval of leave, and other assignments as deemed necessary for the benefit of FCCI. In the future, there may be an opportunity for this position to transition to a hybrid role.

NATURE OF DUTIES:

The position requires the knowledge, skills, and abilities of a professional accountant to perform a wide range of duties relating to the financial management and reporting of the company.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

1. Assist in generating financial statements and preparing working papers to support financial statements of the company and all affiliates and subsidiaries as directed by the Finance Manager.

2. Assist in the processing of accounts payable, payroll, and other financial transactions and ensure proper compiling, coding, calculating, tabulating, auditing, or verifying of transactions for the company and all affiliates and subsidiaries. Analyze accounts payable and payroll data, and make recommendations as necessary to improve processing and controls.

3. Prepare a wide range of working papers, reconciliation, and reports to support and analyze financial information as required by the Finance Manager.

4. Perform other related duties as assigned and serve in whatever other capacity deemed necessary for the successful completion of the mission and goals of FCCI and affiliates and subsidiaries under its patient philosophy.

STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE:

1. Keeps work area neat and organized. Reports safety issues to the team leader immediately.

2. Works efficiently and manages time wisely. Assist other employees when all duties are complete.

3. Communicate any problems, difficulties, or concerns regarding job duties to the team leader.

4. Performs all duties without significant error occurring with any regularity.

5. Meets all deadlines and timeframes for completion of assignments.

6. Represents FCCI professionally at all times. Demonstrates acceptable ability to interact with physicians, staff (“internal customers”) and “external

customers” (patients, family members, insurance companies, home health, etc.) on a professional level at all times. Exhibits good communication skills with physicians, patients, team leaders, and co-workers at all times.

7. Exhibits whenever possible a harmonious relationship with other FCCI employees to accomplish the duties and responsibilities of the position. While perfect harmonious relationships with all employees are sometimes not achievable, not more than an occasional complaint should be received by the team leader about the incumbent of this position.

8. The employee shall work and relate cooperatively with all other employees (internal customers) of FCCI to assure optimum care for the patients and customers of FCCI.

9. Adheres to the FCCI Compliance Plan as it pertains to the above specific job duties. Uses best efforts to maintain compliance by following the FCCI Corporate Compliance Plan, attending FCCI compliance education, following medical documentation guidelines, and communicating concerns regarding compliance issues.

10. Maintains patient confidentiality according to the HIPAA standards of privacy and security.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION:

1.* A bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college with a major in accounting is required.(150-hour degree not required)

2. Familiarity with computer processing of accounts payable, payroll data, and accounting programs is desirable. Also, working knowledge of Excel and Word is desirable.

3. Ability to learn the intricacies of medical financial accounting processes and procedures is required.
