Dr. Khatib’s Advice for Patients: Get Involved In Your Cardio Health

Get Involved in HealthcareIt’s a common scenario: you have a mental list of questions or concerns to bring up at your next doctor’s appointment, but once you’re in the examination room, your mind goes blank. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone – many patients forget what’s on their mind or find that they have even more questions once they get home. With just a little advance preparation, you can make the most of your next doctor’s visit and make a big impact on your overall health – a 2013 study published in Health Affairs Magazine found that patients who are actively involved in their healthcare have average costs that are 8 – 21% lower than those who are not. Below, Dr. Khatib shares his tips to help patients take an active role in their cardiovascular health:

Before Your Appointment

  • Keep a list of any medications (both prescription and over-the-counter), vitamins, or dietary supplements that you take. Bring this list to your appointment.
  • Write down any questions you have for your doctor as they come up, rather than trying to remember them on the spot.

During Your Appointment

  • Bring a pen and paper to write down any instructions, medication names, or instructions. Better yet, bring a friend or family member who can help you listen and ask questions.
  • If your doctor recommends a test or treatment, ask how it is done, how you can prepare for it, and how you will get the results.
  • Repeat instructions back to the doctor or try putting them in your own words to make sure you understand.

After Your Appointment

  • Always follow your doctor’s instructions, and talk with your doctor or pharmacist before you stop taking any medications that were prescribed to you.
  • Make any appointments to have tests done or see another specialist immediately.
