David Swain, DPM, CWSP
Limb Salvage & Lower Extremity Wound Care
Dr. David Swain joined First Coast Cardiovascular Institute in October 2013 after practicing in Jacksonville for four years. As a podiatric surgeon specializing in wound care and limb salvage, Dr. Swain provides his patients with cutting-edge, proactive treatments that increase the likelihood of healing and amputation prevention. He is known for his down-to-earth personality and the compassionate care he provides for his patients.
Dr. Swain attended Georgia Southern University, where he graduated magna cum laude with a BS in biology and a minor in chemistry. During his second year of college, he watched his grandfather go through the long and emotionally painful process of having diabetic ulcers, peripheral arterial disease, and a leg amputation. It was at this time that Dr. Swain realized that helping people prevent leg amputations would be his life’s work. After spending time with several podiatrists who specialized in preventing diabetic amputations, Dr. Swain decided to become a podiatrist.
Upon graduation from Georgia Southern, Dr. Swain attended the Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in North Chicago, Illinois, and later completed a podiatric surgical residency at the Central Alabama Veterans Healthcare System in Montgomery, Alabama. During this time he was exposed to and trained in all aspects of podiatric medicine and surgery with a concentration on diabetic limb salvage and lower extremity orthopedic surgery. Dr. Swain also served as the Chief Resident in his final year and began presenting lectures on amputation prevention and limb preservation.
In his ongoing efforts to educate the community about peripheral arterial disease, amputation education, and limb salvage, Dr. Swain is an active member of the Save a Leg, Save a Life Foundation and volunteers with A Leg Up: The Jacksonville Amputation Support Group. He has also done countless community service health education presentations for doctors, nurses, and members of the general population.
When he is not working, Dr. Swain enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, golfing, playing musical instruments, and going to the beach.
Dr. Swain is board certified by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine and is also a board certified Wound Specialist Physician by the American Board of Wound Management. In addition, he is board certified in Limb Preservation and Salvage, Podiatric Surgery, and Primary Care in Podiatric Medicine by the American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry.
