So what can you do? Recognize that taking care of your heart health is a job for any age. We love these easy steps from the American Heart Association on how to take care of your heart in every decade.

In your 20’s

  • Know your blood pressure and cholesterol levels
  • Check your family history
  • Drink alcohol in moderation – that means one drink for women, two drinks for men
  • Choose birth control wisely

In your 30’s

  • Manage your stress with techniques such as exercise or breathing regimens
  • Make your health a priority, despite the commitment of a family and career

  • Get a regular checkup including:
    • Blood pressure
    • Weight & body mass index
    • Waist circumference
    • Cholesterol
    • Heart exam
    • Fasting blood glucose

In your 50’s

  • Watch your body carefully and communicate with your doctor for any changes that occur
  • Plan your meals for the week and be sure to include fruits, veggies, whole-grains, lean meat, & low-fat dairy

In your 60’s

  • Don’t forget to be physically active- enjoy 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activities every week
