5 Reasons Why Winter is the Best Time to Treat Varicose Veins

varicose veins

It’s a common misconception that varicose veins come with age or that it’s just cosmetic. Varicose veins, if left untreated, can lead to swelling, discoloration and more. If you choose to get your varicose veins treated, it may be more convenient to schedule before winter months end. Below are 5 reasons why it is more beneficial to get your varicose vein taken care of before summer!

Long Pants help you Hide your Healing Legs

After the procedure, there will be a recovery time that differs for every patient. The amount of time it takes to recover depends on the number of veins that were treated. The procedure causes minimal pain, but you will experience some redness and swelling afterward. During the winter season, it is easy to hide your healing legs by dressing up with jeans, long pant, or comfy sweats.

2. Gives your skin time to heal

The sooner you have the treatment, the more time your body will have to recover in the winter months. By summer, your legs will be brand new!

The Sun Causes Damage to the Skin

UV rays from the sun can cause damage to your recovering legs. Since the weather is colder, the treated areas are less likely to be exposed to the sun. If exposed, there is a risk of potential skin discoloration. It is recommended to keep your legs out of UV light for up to three to four weeks after your surgery. This is much easier to do in winter than summer.

Compression Socks can keep you Warm

Compression stockings are thick, tight elastic garment worn around the legs to compress the limb. If you are recovering from a varicose vein procedure, you will likely be advised to wear compression stocking for 2-3 weeks post-procedure. These socks can become uncomfortable to wear during the summer months and not the most ‘fashionable’ paired with shorts and sandals. Winter is the perfect time to hide the socks and use them not only to heal you, but to stay warm.

It’s the Laziest time of the Year

Winter is  the  time to stay indoors, drink hot chocolate by the fire and rest, which is exactly what your healing legs need. It is important to keep your legs rested after your procedure. This can be difficult to do over summer, which is a time for outdoor actives and vacations. Excessive force on your legs can run the risk of the treated veins reopening. It’s important to recover without vigorous activity such as weightlifting, running, hiking, or cycling.

Getting your varicose veins treated over the winter months is convenient, but not always feasible for some. FCCI is able to perform this procedure during any time of the year.
